Kassi's Bedroom Makeover

10/29/2018

Hey there, and welcome back!  If you are a fan of "Before and Afters", then you are in for a treat.  Do you follow me on Instagram?  If so, you may remember me sharing this bedroom design board a few weeks back:
Picture
All sources are listed at the end of this blog post.
My client, Kassi, is a busy single mom who custom built her dream home and although her house is already gorgeous, she needed a little help giving her master suite the "wow" factor it was looking for.  Kassi was a dream to work with from the get-go.  She tends to lean more towards modern design, but isn't afraid of a pop of color while still keeping it warm and cozy with natural wood tones.  I knew right away that this was going to be a fun project.  See below for some of the "BEFORE" photos:

BEFORE:

When Kassi and I met for our initial consultation, she mentioned that she was open to a fun wallpaper (yay!) and that a seating area was a must-have.  Other than that, she gave me free range to design her new space.  These are the initial design boards that I presented her with:

Kassi being the rockstar that she is, made little to no revisions on the design boards and we were rocking and rolling within a few weeks!  See below for the AFTER photos!

What do you guys think?  Quite the transformation, eh?  Thoughts on the design board vs. end result?  Kassi's bedroom is right off the front entrance of her home, so she wanted to be sure it made a statement when guests walked in, and I think we accomplished that!  The fun geometric wallpaper mixed with brass accents make me fall more in love with this space every time I look at it.  Leave a comment below and let me know what you think.  And as always, thanks for stopping by!

Paige

Why I Love My Jord Watch: A Truly Timeless Accessory

10/8/2018

Hey you, happy Monday!  I don't know about you, but since becoming a stay at home mom a little over 2 years ago, I have practically been living in the "mom uniform".  You know, the slobber stained yoga pants, baggy tee shirt and messy bun?  Yup, that's me.

But lately I have been trying to take a few extra minutes in the morning for some self care- and trust me, it's long overdue!  I have found that if I put on a bit of mascara, spray in some dry shampoo, and throw on a few timeless accessories, that I feel like a completely different person.

It seems like a no brainer, but just reminding myself to take an extra 20 minutes in the day for those few things can really make me feel better.  Now let's be honest... I'm not busting out the spanx and stilettos for a target run but something as simple as throwing on a real pair of pants and a new cool watch can really change my attitude on the day.  Which is why I am so excited to share my new favorite accessory with you- my Jord watch.
Picture
Picture
Why am I obsessed with Jord?  It goes with anything!

Jord offers so many versatile and timeless pieces that it was hard to choose just one.  I immediately fell in love with their unique wooden bands and knew it would be the perfect everyday accessory.  I chose the "Frankie" series Zebrawood and Champagne watch and I couldn't be more obsessed.  I love how neutral it is, and that I can pair this timeless piece with just about anything.  Leggings and a baseball cap, sure.  Booties and a chunky sweater?  Yup!  You can dress this watch up and you can dress it down, and what mom doesn't love versatility?

"Native to West Africa, zebrawood offers a striking grain contrast and exceptional finish. Although the growth rings are very pronounced, the wood occurs naturally with both large grain and fine grain patterns. Zebrawood is considered a luxury hardwood and is most commonly used in veneer application. JORD uses only whole wood stock to create our Zebrawood watches."

Great gift idea!  You can personalize it!

One of my favorite things about Jord watches is that you can personalize them.  That's right- Jord offers personalized engraving on their watches AND their one of a kind cedar boxes.  How cool is that?  Talk about a perfect gift idea!  With the holidays quickly approaching, I have a feeling my next Jord will be one of the men's series for my hubby- the real watch fanatic in this house!

I am thinking something along the lines of "Our love is timeless" or "Every second I love you more".  You know, something sweet that will prove that I still love him even when I'm nagging because he forgot to put the toilet seat down or put his laundry away- ha!
Picture
Unique simplistic design- Truly one of a kind!

Since receiving my Jord watch in the mail, I have gotten so many compliments on it.  Everyone that sees my new timepiece can't get over how beautiful and different the design is.  It's very simplistic and like nothing they have ever seen- and I love that!

Be sure to check out JORD’s website to see more of their hand crafted watch designs. They’re made from sustainable resources, are a great gift option, and are truly unlike any other!

Guest Bedroom Makeover

7/2/2018

I have a confession... We have lived in our home for 5 years now, and I am JUST now getting around to making our guest bedroom presentable.  For the last few years I have been sharing images of our home on Instagram and Facebook and not once have I shared photos of our upstairs because, well, it's just not worthy.

We have lived here for years but all the while we have been trying to move back east, and because of that I kept making excuses on why I should wait, and thinking that there was "no point" in spending time and money upstairs.  Well, a few weekends ago I decided there is a point.  It was time.  We have family and friends that stay with us pretty frequently and although I am sure they don't care what their quarters look like- I do.  I wanted to be sure that when our parents or siblings come and spend a week with us, that they aren't just sleeping in a bed surrounded by 4 blank walls- which is exactly what this bedroom was before.  Seriously.  See embarrassing "BEFORE" photo below.
My starting point:
Picture
I know, I know... not too inviting, eh?  Now, being that this was our guest room and wasn't being used TOO often, I didn't want to spend a fortune to update it.  I knew we could make use of the current bed frame and nightstand, and that I would need to buy new bedding, window treatments, and possibly a new piece of furniture or two.  But I was in luck...  Driving home one day in the pouring rain, I saw a large amount of furniture out at someone's curb with a sign that said "free".  Some in decent shape, and some not.  I pulled over and started rummaging through to see if there was anything I could use, and low and behold there was!  I loaded my SUV with two large man made shelves and a heavy oak bookcase while someone smiled and waved from the kitchen window.  (I have no shame if you can't tell..) Here is what I left with:
Picture
Picture
Nothing to bat your eyes at, I know- but I knew that I would use them eventually.  They sat in our garage for a week or two until it dawned on me- "These would be perfect for the guest bedroom!".  I sanded everything down and threw a little white paint on them, and they were good as new in my book.
Picture
Picture
For the rest of the room, I defintely wanted cute and stylish, yet affordable which is why I shopped my attic first, and then went to Ikea and Hobby Lobby second.  I did a lot of running around and pulled this bedroom together in less than 2 days!  I am the type of person that once I start something I want it done NOW.  My husband has a love/hate relationship with that obsession of mine, HA!  But in this case, I think it paid off.

Here is the finished product...

After

Picture
Picture
You may recognize this Safavieh rug from my old Instagram photos. Until recently, this was in our living room!
Picture
The blue ruffle pillow was one that I had forgotten about in our attic storage bins.
Picture
The grey nightstand and white mirror were both second hand finds that I painted myself.
Where did I use the garbage picked shelves and bookcase you ask?
Picture
Besides the small blue vase, hourglass timer, and black collapsible bin- everything else in this shot was in our attic storage.
It's almost like they were made for this spot, don't you think?  As I always say, a little paint goes a long way and nothing beats FREE!

Wal-Mart Favorites!

6/19/2018

Hello and happy Wednesday!  As you can see by the title, today I am sharing my Wal-Mart favorites with you.  Yes, you heard me right... Wal-Mart.  If you're like me, you may have already noticed the new Wally World ads on your social media accounts where they are advertising super trendy and modern home decor and furniture.  The first time I saw one of the ads I had to do a double take.  Actually, lets be honest... the first FEW times I saw the ads I had to make sure I was seeing correctly- I couldn't believe my eyes.  Wal-Mart?!  Are they finally stepping their game up or what is going on here?  Well, it appears as thought they are and I am HERE FOR IT.

Not only does their website offer many decor styles such as Farmhouse, Traditional, Boho, they also have a lot of Mid-Century, Scandinavian, and Modern decor as well.  And the best part?  Most of these goodies are at famously affordable Wal-Mart prices.  Woop woop!  If they keep this up, I think they may just be giving 'ol Target a run for their money!  ...Did I just say that?

Luckily for you, you don't need to spend hours searching the web to find some of the best pieces Wal-Mart has to offer, because I already did that for you!  I have gathered my top 30 favorites pieces all the way from wall-art and vases, to lighting and furniture so that you guys can shop directly!  And trust me, there is more where these came from!

I should also point out that in no way is this post sponsored by Wal-Mart!  I just had to share with you guys- it's only fair! HA

Happy shopping, friends!

Living Room/Entryway Restyle

6/2/2018

Hello again!  Did you guys get a chance to check out my latest blog post?  The beautiful and DRAMATIC kitchen remodel that I designed over at my client Abigail's house?  If not, here is a refresher:

That kitchen might go down in history as one of my favorites ever, BUT if you read that blog post you might remember that I mentioned restyling her entryway and living room as well.  Abi wanted a fresh look and some new accessories in both spaces, while keeping all of their existing furniture.  Sometimes all it takes is for another set of eyes to get a fresh perspective on a space, and thats what I did.  I incorporated all of Abigail's current furniture, while giving paint and DIY suggestions, along with helping her make some choices on their fireplace remodel.  This scope of work fell perfectly into my "Enhancements" package that I offer on my website which can be viewed here.

Living Room

Let's take a look at the living room BEFORE:

Picture
As you can see, Abi already had furniture that I could work with, and a large space filled with possibilities.  As per usual, my first thought is paint. that. oak.  If you have been following me for a while you are probably not surprised by that.  I am a firm believer that a little paint goes a long way, and by "paint" I usually mean white.  Brighter is better in my opinion.  Don't get me wrong, I don't hate the look of ALL oak, and I do love the warmth of natural wood tones, but in Abigail's case there was just a bit too much of it.  The beautiful beams on the ceiling, the hardwood floors, the built-in window seating, all of the trim work, and the fireplace mantle.  It was a lot.  We needed to brighten and modernize the space while bringing my client's funky and colorful personality in.

For the fireplace we decided to do something very similar to the kitchen island meaning we removed the river rock completely, and instead replaced it with shiplap.  The only difference being that instead of the shiplap being "White Dove" by Benjamin Moore, I chose "Peppercorn" by Sherwin Williams in a matte finish.  The shiplap brings in the farmhouse vibes but also adds a more modern feel with the darker paint color.  The existing corbels were replaced by industrial bolts, and the hearth replaced by a black natural slab.  Here is the finished result:

And a side by side BEFORE & AFTER:

Now for the rest of the living room!  I should note that Abi had a decent budget for decor items but it really didn't take too much.  I sourced new pillows, throws, rug, wall art and accessories.  That, rearranging existing furniture and a little paint is all it took to restyle this space.  Let's take a look at the initial design board that I sent Abi for the living room:
Picture
As you can see here, this design includes ALL of her furniture while adding new accessories and repainting the dark navy accent wall back to the light grey (Abalone by Benjamin Moore) to brighten things up.  Lets take one more look at the BEFORE:
Picture
And AFTER:
Picture
What do you guys think?  Repainting the dark accent wall, window trim, and built-ins made a HUGE difference.
Picture
Picture
Now for the built-ins and window trim!  It took a little convincing on my end to show my client that painting this window trim was extremely necessary and I don't blame her- it was a lot of work.  I told her "Better you than me..." Ha!  But I just knew how amazing the end result was going to be and trust me- IT IS.  Here is a reminder of the BEFORE:
Picture
and AFTER:
Picture
BRIGHT. AND. BEAUTIFUL!  The trim work and seating are painted in "White Dove" by Benjamin Moore to match the kitchen, as well as the new shaker style cabinet fronts for a more modern look.  Oh, and can we just take a second for those new brass sconces?  I am still obsessed.
Picture
The final area in Abi's living room was a simple restyle using her existing furniture and decor pieces.  Here is the Before and After:
Picture
Picture

Now, let's take a look at the Entryway Restyle!

Entryway

Abi didn't need too much done in the entryway but I did source a few new accessories for her, and convince her to paint the trim work, ha!  Here is a look at the BEFORE:
Picture
Picture
Picture
...and the AFTER:
Picture
As you can see, all that was done here was:
  • Painted trim work
  • Replaced light fixture
  • Added new pillow and throws
  • Added new storage bin
  • Centered the rug
